* Compassionate Volunteers Mentor Fellow Equestrians In a National Campaign
"Riders Against Equine Abuse"
Help a Horse…..Teach a Human
February 14, 2002 - Old Chatham, NY - The Equine Fund, a non profit educational organization located in Old Chatham, New York, has embarked on a campaign to encourage those who know how to care for horses to teach those who don't. This effort of compassionate, volunteer mentoring is intended to keep horses out of harms way. The Equine Fund executive director, Allison Marchese, explains. "The Riders Against Equine Abuse campaign invites riders all over the country to keep it in their daily consciousness to help horses by teaching other riders and horse owners a little about what they know. The idea is that the more people know about horses, the less likely they are to hurt or harm them. Ms. Marchese continues, "Let's say you're a rider and you help someone else who may not have much experience with horses, three things can happen. You immediately feel good, the person you're teaching knows more and feels good and the horse is more likely better off too."
The Equine Fund wants to hear from you. "We invite riders who join the campaign to write or email their teaching experience to The Equine Fund. Each week these stories will be published on the Equine Fund website to encourage others to join the campaign. "We want to create a natural network of riders caring for other riders and looking out for horses. Sometimes people think that joining a cause like this means a lot of time, or a long commitment. This approach is easy, so please get started!"
Allison Marchese is a pleasure rider and amateur dressage competitor. She has been a marketing professional in the health field for twenty years and has loved horses all of her life. She created The Equine Fund with the sole purpose of preventing abuse, neglect and abandonment of horses. " People must realize that horses are completely dependent on humans for everything. Imagine a horse is a giant baby and his stall a giant crib. The only difference between the two is that babies can communicate and horses can't. A few years ago I started visiting equine rescue centers and noticed that while there are thousands of rescue operations dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating horses, there were so few organizations dedicated to educate people to stop the abuse before it happens."
The Equine Fund has other projects in the works as well. Organizers are working to find a way to collaborate with equine product manufacturers and suppliers to encourage and nurture their role in educating the public. Currently, The Equine fund group is working diligently to raise funds to support these initiatives and others.
